Mark Tanner, cello
Hailed by the Los Angeles Times as a "commanding" cellist, Mark Tanner has led an active musical life, spanning four continents and four decades.
He began his cello studies at the age of eight with Joel Krosnick; a year later, he was accepted by Aldo Parisot, and remained with him for the next 15 years, receiving both Bachelor of Arts cum laude and Master of Music degrees from Yale University.
Gathering top prizes in several major international competitions, including the J.S. Bach Competition and the Villa-Lobos Competition, Mr. Tanner has also won numerous national competitions, including the Hudson Valley Young Artist's Competition.
A regular soloist with orchestras from coast to coast, he also performs extensively as a chamber musician. He has performed in the prestigious Marlboro Festival, and also appeared as a guest artist with the Wall Street Chamber Players, the Coyote Consort, and the 20th Century Unlimited in Santa Fe. He presented the West Coast premiere of the Tan Dun "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" Concerto. More recently, he appeared with conductor Raymond Leppard and the Grand Rapids Symphony.
His travels take him repeatedly to South America, where he has presented many series of concerts and masterclasses in Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro, as well as throughout Chile. He has also presented numerous recitals and masterclasses in Seoul and Suwon, South Korea, including at the Seoul National University.
In 2010, he and his wife, violinist Janna Lower, founded the Tropikordia Foundation with the mission to promote string performance around the world. The Foundation has engaged in a number of projects in such diverse locations as Cuba, Albania, and South America.
Currently principal cellist of the New West Symphony, Mr. Tanner has also served as principal cellist for the San Diego Symphony, the Nashville Symphony, and the New Haven Symphony. He has been principal cellist, featured soloist, and chamber music coach for numerous music festivals ranging from Colorado to Los Angeles to St. Bart's.
He has arranged a number of works for cello orchestra, several of which have been recorded by Delos. His arrangement of the Barber "Adagio" has been performed internationally, most recently by the London Symphony Orchestra.
In addition to his musical activities, Mr. Tanner is an executive of a medical device company, the chairman of an angel investment fund, and an active entrepreneur.
