Explore glorious St. Petersburg, conceived by Peter the Great to take Russia from the “Dark Ages” into the “Enlightened Age.”  At Palace Square see the incredible columned façade of the former Winter Palace, an architectural masterpiece of the Russian Baroque and now home to the Hermitage Museum. The Peter and Paul Fortress, built in 1703 and throughout history the symbolic center of the Russian Empire, contains the royal tombs from Peter the Great onward. See the beautiful gold-onion-domed St. Nicholas’ Cathedral which remained open throughout the Soviet era.  Ramble along the 2 ½ mile Nevsky Prospekt, the main thoroughfare of St. Petersburg and considered the most elegant street and the chief shopping area of St. Petersburg.  Other things to see: the magnificient summer palace, Peterhof, one of the world’s most remarkable palace/garden complexes covering nearly 2,500 acres; Smolny Convent where glorious concerts are held; the Mariinsky Theatre, the Pushkin Museum and more.
